Cabon steel grade SAE 1020 is a low hardness and low tensile strength alloy. The Brinell hardness of the SAE 1020 Steel Tube ranges between 119 – 235, whereas its tensile strength is between 410 MPa to 790 MPa. Though it lacks some of the characteristics of a conventional carbon steel grade, the SAE 1020 Steel Tube exhibits other important characteristics such as high strength, high machinability, high ductility as well as good weldability. A low carbon content in its chemistry makes the pipe resistant to flame hardening or to induction hardening.

As with all carbon steel alloys, the chemical makeup of the AISI 1020 Pipe majorly constitutes of carbon and iron with elements like manganese, phosphorus and sulfur in very trace amounts. To determine the chemistry of the percentage of elements, the ASTM A519 Tube is subjected to heat analysis. A benefit of using low alloyed steel grades such as the AISI 1020 Carbon Steel Seamless Tubings is that the absence of elements makes them unresponsive to averse situations like nitriding. If the alloy is subjected to carburizing, it is possible to achieve a hardness value of more than  Rc65. Although the core strength of A519 cold drawn seamless tubing remains the same as in the supplied condition. This being said, the use of a nitriding treatment on the material could contribute to certain advantages over a conventional carburizing process.

Generally, hot-finished or cold-finished, the carbon steel 1020 is largely used in all automated sectors to enhance properties like weldability or machinability. The specified ASTM A519 Grade 1020 Steel Pipe is well suited for mechanical applications and is often coated with a layer of oil to improve its corrosion resistance properties. The alloy used for A519 cd seamless tube is either strand cast or they could be cast in an ingot.
